The SWMC Research Department was established in 1998. Several physicians, with the assistance of their own clinic nurses, began to seek and participate in studies on a limited basis. As time passed several nurse coordinators were committed to research to more effectively carry out trials. Currently there are 8 research coordinators working out of three offices and the hospital, one regulatory documents specialist, one recruitment specialist, one ACRP–certified RN supervisor, and a medical director.
Over the years we have enjoyed successes, such as ranking second in the world in enrollment on our very first pediatric study – a skin infection trial –and enrolling 276 babies in the recent REST rotavirus vaccine trial. The therapeutic areas in which we’ve done clinical trials include skin infections, mono, vaccines, diabetes, pneumonia, ear infections, asthma and asthmatic devices, allergic rhinitis, hypertension, influenza and breast cancer. SWMC is committed to maintaining its culture of high quality medical care for our community through the ethical conduct of clinical trials. We are seeking to expand our inpatient capabilities with our hospitalists, and in the near future hope to engage area sub-specialty physicians to foster interest in clinical research.
